I've also been lucky over the years to come across a lot of great resources from other musicians and thinkers.  Here are some of my favorite buys:

If you're going to learn jazz guitar the smartest way i can think of is to grab Sid Jacob's "Complete Book of Jazz Guitar Lines and Phrases" and study through it with a good teacher [while listening to great jazz and learning tunes of course!].

Once you do that and learn the basic chords move onto "Contemporary Khancepts" and "The Advancing Guitarist."  Give it 2 years and you'll be way ahead of most people who ever touch the genre.

When it comes to fingerstyle playing [which everyone should explore at least a little bit] I'm a big fan of taking the classical guitar route.  "Pumping Nylon" and the "Sagreras Studies" are foundational for developing solid technique.

Once you do that and are ready for a big challenge, try out a few pieces from Ralph Towner's "Guitar Works."  I'm still trying to figure out how the heck he plays half of what he does and the compositions are fantastic.

While you're at it, grab a subscription to Fingerstyle Guitar.  They helped me expand my idea of what was possible on guitar tremendously during those early years.
